Godalmings latest effort to secure only their league win of the season imploded late on against Burymead this saturday. Leading 2-0 midway through the second half thanks to a brace from Robbie Miller they let Burymead back into the game via a penalty given away by a rash (and needless) challenge from Josh Ackroyd and then were harshly penalised for what was at best an awful handball decision. Perhaps the referee was seeking to make amends for not sending off Aaron Kelly for lashing out at a burymead player following an altercation...in any case incompetant refereeing cannot be excused...
Having said that Godalming missed numerous other chances. Robbie Bridger making a rare appearance missed on a number of occasions and Miller was unlucky with a couple of decent efforts.
Elsewhere Godalming played a 3-5-2 formation to good effect. Taking the game to Burymead, they controlled much of the play in both the first and second halves. Barclay and Gallaher were effective in the middle and the ever dangerous Nat Sharp was a constant threat with his probing runs and dribbles.
At 2-0 up the game should have been in the bag. Maybe a lack of confidence, maybe the tactical nous to close the game off - or maybe just sheer bad luck ?
In any event it was another two points dropped and the atmosphere in the changing room afterwards reflected this feeling. A team win bonus of £60 was on offer to secure the 3 points. It was still not enough but it won't be long before the boys start to deliver. Ewhurst next week would be a good starting point !
