Wed 29 Nov 2006  GFA Challenge Trophy : 2nd Round
Almondsbury Town 4
Godalming & Farncombe Athletic Reserves 2

MATT THORNE (1)
MARK CHERRY (1)

Farm were given a dose of a Hellenic league double wammy when they were dumped out of the GFA Challenge Trophy 2nd round on Wednesday night by Almondsbury Town in a fiesty encounter 4-2.
Played at GFA headquarters, Farm created the first opening of the game on ten minutes when Troy Simpson's misplaced shot fell into the path of Twaine Plummer but his hurried effort from inside the box was sliced well wide of the post.
Almondsbury took the lead out of nothing after twenty minutes when Gary Saunders failed to cut out a crossfield pass to Paul McKelvaney and he ran on to beat Rich Fey at his near post with a firm shot.
Farm got a deserved equaliser five minutes before the interval when strong persistance from Luke Corrish on the right wing was rewarded when Twaine Plummer's low cross reached Mark Cherry in space just outside the box and he found the corner of the net with a fine curling right foot shot.
Lee Marshall's cross shot had the keeper scrambling across his goal to push clear, but all their hard work was undone with the last kick of the half as Town scrambled in a second from two yards out , which appeared to get a final touch off a Farm player.
The second half immediately sprang to life when the hosts extended their lead with another close range effort as Farm's minds still appeared to be focused on their half time cup of tea.
To Farm's credit they took the game to Almondsbury and were back in it when Matt Thorne forced the ball over the line through a pack of players and on the hour mark and then appeared to be deprived of an equaliser when Plummer was put through on goal and his shot past the keeper seemed to have crossed the line before being hacked clear by a home defender.
Cherry was replaced by Mark Thomas following a heavy challenge on him which split open his shinpad, then Thorne's right foot shot flashed just wide of the far post as they continued to press forward.
Fey produced two fine saves as the home side regained the initiative but was at the centre of controversy two minutes from time when he was harshly penalised by the referee with a back pass decision for picking up the ball in a melee of players just four yards out and Town made no mistake with a quick free kick to secure a 4-2 victory.
